Small Business News
Sometimes inspiration for a business idea can come from the unlikeliest quarters. UK ready meals boss Charlie Bigham formed a plan for his venture after spending a hot and sleepless night in a camper van on the border between Iran and Pakistan. On his return home, he put the plan into action, despite never having worked in the food industry.
However, what can you do if you’ve come up with an original business idea (maybe not in a camper van!) but you want to get some feedback from others before you set it up? How do you protect that idea and stop someone from stealing it? Rocket Lawyer UK can help with protecting your ideas. We have quick guides on intellectual property and both one-way and two-way confidentiality agreements.
In property news this week, PM Law’s Harvey Harding has written for the blog on the help to buy scheme. We were pleased to welcome Millie Johnson, RLUK technical editor, to the blog who has written a really useful guide to the legal stuff that needs to be considered when entering the buy to let market for the first time. We also thought these tips for landlords from Business Matters magazine were really useful and don’t forget you can get lots of help and guidance on property matters from our quick guides.
Marketing a small business can seem a little daunting but there is lots of guidance out there. Don’t forget the more “old-fashioned” technology of email. This article explains why email still works and how to make your email strategy better. Lots of small businesses also keep blogs. Writing your own copy is easier that you think. Moo.com’s Cat Totty gives some good advice on the Enterprise Nation website.
Tech and Social Media News
With so many different social media channels, why should a business care about Pinterest? A new report has found that after Facebook, Pinterest is the next largest traffic-referrer to online publishers, driving more traffic than Linkedin, Google+, Reddit, and Twitter combined!
This week was Ada Lovelace Day an international celebration of women in science, technology, engineering and maths. Mental Floss had some great inspiring quotes from famous women in Tech. Tech City News looked at the perks, problems and numbers of women in technology in Europe finding that in general things are looking up.
As you may know, we are based on Shoreditch where new street art appears all the time, much of it by acclaimed street artists. We loved this new piece by Dr Zadok snapped by our own Millie Johnson this week .
