Rocket Round Up: Start Me Up!

There were a few news items this week of special interest to small business owners. The Federation of Small Business Owners annual conference was addressed by Vince Cable who told conference that the government had acted over two pressing concerns for small business: petrol duty and national insurance. Shadow business secretary, Chuka Umunna, also spoke,  championing a small business agency as well as the idea of small business Saturday, an idea already popular in the US. A full summary of the conference can be found at the Guardian Small Business Network Hub.

Also this week, the government has published a practical guide to cybersecurity for small businesses following an increase in attacks. The guide on how to put simple, sensible measures to protect your business is available here as a downloadable PDF.

Startup stories

The startup stories that caught our eye this week include an interview with Emma Bridgewater, founder of the eponymous pottery company who has some key advice on the need for imagination when running a business. Another fascinating story about how technology is shaping the fashion business comes out of San Francisco based startup Continuum who are using 3D printers to personalise and design unique clothing. Technological advances also make it possible for people to start up businesses from their own home and cut overheads.
